Literati, the Yahoo! multi-player word game, is the online hot spot for word geeks. At any time of day or night you’ll find literally thousands of players online shuffling their virtual tiles in the hopes of moving up the ladder.

One of the reasons the game is so popular, I suspect, is even if you’re not an outstanding Scrabble player, you can be good at Literati.

The reason? You can set up the game so that there are no penalties for guessing words.

Scrabble purists I can hear you gasping in outrage right now. Fear not. You can create your own table and include a challenge stage.

However, do keep in mind that Literati is not Scrabble. As Trevor Johnson, author of the popular e-books “Scrabble® Bonus Word Techniques”, says, “Literati is a game that has altered the rules, changed the bonus squares on the board, uses a different dictionary source, and so forth, from the real Scrabble game. In short, is just is not Scrabble at all. It is a word game with some similarities to Scrabble.”

Despite that, it does help deliver a fix for us Scrabble players who can’t get a game together as often as we’d like.
